Thesis Defense

The final examination represents the concluding stage of the study programme and consists of the public defense of a thesis prepared by the student under the supervision of an academic advisor.

In order to be admitted to the final examination, students must have obtained all the credits required by their study plan, with the exception of those assigned to the final examination, and must be in good standing with the payment of university fees.

The degree may be awarded regardless of the number of years of enrolment, provided that all the required ECTS credits have been successfully completed.

The application for graduation must be submitted to the competent administrative office, signed by the academic advisor and forwarded through the Head of the Department, at least 180 days before the beginning of the graduation session in which the student intends to defend the thesis. The official protocol date shall be considered as the reference date.

At the time of submitting the application, the topic of the thesis must be indicated. The final thesis, signed by the academic advisor and, where applicable, by the co-advisor, must be uploaded through the online procedures at least seven working days before the graduation session.

Faculty members of the University, visiting professors, and contract lecturers holding a teaching assignment in the academic year in which the application is submitted may act as academic advisors.

Students may also benefit from the collaboration of a co-supervisor, who may be a faculty member from another university, including foreign institutions, or a qualified external professional or expert.

The thesis must consist of an original piece of work, either experimental or literature-based, proportionate to the number of ECTS credits assigned to the final examination.

  • For the Consulenza e Professione curriculum, the thesis is normally written in Italian. Upon request by the student, the academic advisor may authorize the thesis to be written in English.
  • For the International Management curriculum, the thesis must be written exclusively in English.

The final examination consists of the presentation of the thesis, which may be supported by multimedia tools, followed by a discussion with the Examination Committee. The time allocated for the presentation and discussion is the same for all candidates.

The discussion takes place in person, and the final grade is publicly announced at the end of the session.

The final degree mark is expressed out of 110 and is determined by three components:

  • the weighted average of the examinations, converted into a mark out of 110;
  • an additional score related to the student’s academic record (up to 4 points);
  • a score assigned to the final examination (up to 7 points).

The Examination Committee may award up to 4 additional points for the academic record, taking into account participation in international mobility programmes with the acquisition of ECTS credits, completion of the degree within the normal duration of the programme (or within one additional year), and the possible award of honours (lode) in core subjects.

For the final examination, the Committee may assign up to 7 points, evaluating the quality of the thesis, the candidate’s mastery of the topic and relevant literature, the ability to synthesize and present the material effectively, and the relevance of the answers provided during the discussion.

The minimum mark required to obtain the degree is 66/110, while the maximum mark is 110/110, with the possible award of honours (cum laude) in accordance with the provisions of the academic regulations.

Honours may be awarded, upon proposal of the academic advisor and with the unanimous approval of the Committee, to candidates who achieve the score required by the regulations. In cases of particular merit, the Committee may also confer an Academic Mention.

Final examinations take place in at least three sessions per year, in accordance with the Academic Calendar. The degree diploma is awarded at a later date during the official graduation ceremony organized by the University.
